Role Purpose 

The Mechanic – Vehicles & Forklifts is responsible for conducting preventive maintenance, diagnostic assessments, and repairs on  internal fleet of vehicles and forklifts. This role ensures that all transport and lifting equipment is safe, operational, and compliant with safety standards to support uninterrupted factory and field project operations. 

This hands-on technical role is central to minimizing downtime, extending equipment life, and maintaining operational readiness in a demanding industrial environment. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

1. Preventive Maintenance & Servicing 

  • Perform routine maintenance and scheduled servicing for light vehicles, trucks, forklifts, and other mechanical assets. 
  • Maintain service schedules and ensure timely completion to avoid unexpected breakdowns. 
  • Lubricate, clean, inspect, and adjust mechanical systems, including braking, transmission, suspension, and hydraulic systems. 

2. Diagnostics & Mechanical Repairs 

  • Conduct mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic diagnostics to identify issues in vehicles and forklifts. 
  • Repair or replace faulty components, such as engines, gearboxes, alternators, starters, brakes, clutches, suspension systems, and hydraulic systems. 
  • Utilize diagnostic tools and software where applicable to support troubleshooting. 

3. Emergency & Breakdown Response 

  • Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns within company premises or on-site projects. 
  • Assess and repair vehicles and forklifts on-site or coordinate towing to the workshop if required. 
  • Maintain a well-stocked and mobile toolbox for rapid response. 

4. Workshop Management & Record Keeping 

  • Maintain accurate records of all repairs, services, and replacements performed. 
  • Monitor spare parts usage and request replenishment to ensure workshop readiness. 
  • Maintain workshop tools, equipment, and cleanliness in line with safety and quality standards. 

5. Safety, Compliance & Inspection 

  • Ensure all mechanical work is conducted in compliance with workplace safety standards, PPE usage, and manufacturer guidelines. 
  • Prepare vehicles and forklifts for annual inspections and certifications. 
  • Report safety risks or recurring mechanical issues to supervisors for escalation and systemic improvement. 

6. Technical Support to Operations 

  • Provide pre-operation inspection guidance to drivers and forklift operators. 
  • Train operators on basic equipment checks and daily maintenance procedures. 
  • Liaise with the procurement team on specifications for spare parts and consumables. 
Qualification

Key Qualifications & Experience 

  • Certificate or Diploma in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. 
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in repairing and maintaining vehicles and forklifts, preferably in an industrial or logistics-heavy environment. 
  • Strong technical knowledge in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, forklift transmission systems, and automotive electricals. 
  • Valid driver’s license (Class BCE) and/or Forklift operation certification is an added advantage. 
  • Familiarity with workshop safety protocols and preventive maintenance programs.

  • Attention to Detail: Strong inspection and diagnostic ability to detect faults early and perform precise repairs.

  • Safety Focus: Strong commitment to safety procedures and best practices when working with machinery. 
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot and recommend long-term solutions for recurring mechanical issues. 
  • Team Collaboration: Works well with workshop teams, operators, procurement, and project staff. 

 

Working Conditions 

  • Based at the Nairobi factory/workshop with occasional field travel to project sites. 
  • Requires lifting, kneeling, and working under equipment in both indoor and outdoor settings. 
  • Exposure to noise, oil, grease, and industrial equipment – full PPE provided.
