Job Role

Role Purpose 

The Pharmaceutical Technologist ensures the accurate dispensing of medications and supports clinical teams in delivering safe, effective, and evidence-based pharmaceutical care. This role upholds the highest standards of ethical practice, maintains rigorous inventory controls, provides patient education, and contributes to continuous quality improvement within the pharmacy unit. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

1. Dispensing & Medication Safety 

  • Dispense prescribed medications accurately in accordance with prescriptions and established protocols. 
  • Ensure 100% accuracy in medication labelling and packaging. 
  • Prevent, report, and document all dispensing errors and near misses. 

2. Patient Education & Counseling 

  • Provide clear, respectful, and complete drug use instructions to patients. 
  • Counsel patients on dosage, interactions, contraindications, and potential side effects. 
  • Support adherence by addressing patient questions and concerns. 

3. Inventory & Stock Management 

  • Maintain real-time inventory records of all pharmaceutical items. 
  • Conduct weekly stock audits and assist in ordering and restocking processes. 
  • Monitor and segregate near-expiry and expired medications in compliance with protocols. 

4. Compliance & Quality Assurance 

  • Ensure full compliance with PPB regulations, licensing standards, and hospital SOPs. 
  • Maintain proper documentation for all pharmaceutical transactions and records. 
  • Participate in internal audits and quality assurance reviews. 

5. Clinical Collaboration 

  • Liaise with clinicians and nurses to ensure optimal drug selection and administration. 
  • Participate in ward rounds as required, contributing to pharmaceutical decision-making. 
  • Alert clinical teams to any drug shortages or substitutions. 

6. Risk Management & Reporting 

  • Report all adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and medication incidents promptly. 
  • Take corrective measures to prevent recurrence and ensure patient safety. 
  • Engage in pharmacovigilance activities as directed by the hospital or PPB. 
Qualification

Qualifications & Experience 

  • Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognized institution 
  • Registered and licensed by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) 
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of post-licensure experience in a hospital or clinical pharmacy setting 
  • Demonstrated understanding of hospital pharmacy operations and medication safety standards
